“I believe in challenges and feedback mechanisms. Having the ability to keep score in your own
exercise with tools like Pedometers and Treadmill Speedometers and Odemeters, the new fitbits,
help. People have trouble sticking to an exercise programme when they don't really know how far
they've come or how successful they are. Keeping healthy in mind gets easier as you get fitter. Even
if you weren't planning to eat better, you will. No one wants to sacrifice the benefit or gruelling
exercise regimes to a weakness for ice cream.
Setting goals is another important factor to exercise success. I have clients this year who have set
targets including bike rides on parts of the Tour de France, the 3 hills Climb in 24 hours, a marathon
swim event and some Tough Mudder events. Make co-workers and friends aware of your goals. This
gives you a second conscience and less likely to cancel a workout if you know that the managers of
sales may ask you if you made it to the gym. Tell people what your goal is. Your support network is
your family and trainer.
Your trainer is a vital person in this. A good trainer will programme your goal, manage your
expectation and keep you up on track. The trainer will monitor your progress, and get anything from
10-50% more out of you per workout. “
